What to Expect

Our Beginner Horse Riding Experience is designed to help you feel confident from the moment you arrive. You do not need any previous riding experience, and there is no pressure to know what to do before you come.

You will be welcomed by our team, introduced to one of our horses or ponies, and given time to get comfortable around them. Depending on the session, you may help with grooming, learn how to prepare your horse, and then have a gentle introduction to riding in the arena.

Once you feel ready, your instructor will support you with the basics of balance, steering and stopping. Where suitable, the experience may also include a relaxed guided ride through our fields or surrounding countryside.

This is more than just a riding lesson. It is a chance to slow down, connect with horses, enjoy the outdoors and create a memorable experience in a beautiful Lake District setting.

"My husband and I had our very first horse riding experience today at Harness Change Bigland Hall, and we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

We were greeted so warmly and had the opportunity to groom our beautiful horses, Storm and Jigsaw, before the ride. Our instructors, Sheryl and Emma, were absolutely amazing from start to finish. They explained every step so clearly, from grooming and saddling the horses, to helping us mount and guiding us throughout the ride. They were incredibly patient, supportive, and taught us so much about horses in general.

What we especially appreciated was how much genuine care and affection they showed towards the horses. It was lovely to see how well looked after and loved they are.

We were also lucky with the weather and got to admire the stunning fells around us, which made the whole experience even more special.

We will definitely be returning and honestly can’t wait already. We miss Storm and Jigsaw so much already!

Thank you for such a memorable first experience!"
