At Harness Change, our horses are at the heart of everything we do.
They teach, carry, calm, challenge and connect with people every single day. They help nervous riders find confidence, support children and young people to regulate emotions and build trust, and create moments of calm, joy and belonging for so many in our community. Help a Horse is our monthly giving scheme, created to make sure these incredible horses receive the care, comfort and dignity they deserve for life. When you sign up, you are helping provide the everyday essentials and specialist support that keep our horses safe, healthy and comfortable, now and into the future.
Why help a Horse Matters
Properly caring for horses is a daily, year-round commitment. At Harness Change, the annual cost of keeping a single horse typically ranges from £5,280 to £8,188, depending on their age, health and individual needs.
Almost all of the horses in our care are veterans. Many have spent years supporting riders, learners and programmes, and now need additional care, medication and specialist treatment to remain happy, healthy and comfortable in later life. This goes far beyond basic upkeep. It reflects our commitment to lifelong welfare, not short-term solutions.
The average annual cost of care can include:

Older horses often need carefully tailored nutrition to support their condition, digestion, joint health and overall wellbeing, making specialist feeding an essential part of their care.

What is Help a Horse?
Help a Horse is our monthly donation scheme, designed to support the real, ongoing cost of caring for the horses at Harness Change.
A single monthly donation may only cover a small part of a horse’s annual care, but regular support from many people adds up to something powerful. It helps us meet everyday costs, respond to changing needs as horses age, and plan responsibly for the future.
This is shared care and collective impact, many people doing what they can, so our horses are supported for life.
